Can empathy save the world?

July 1st, 2010

Conventional wisdom has long held that humans are by nature materialistic and self-interested. But scholar and writer Jeremy Rifkin argues in his new book that science is forcing us to rethink this notion, and that the growth of human empathy could help solve the problems that confront the world. MPR News interviews Jeremy Rifkin, author of “The Empathic Civilization: The Race to Global Consciousness in a World in Crisis.”  He is president of the Foundation on Economic Trends.

Teaching Kids Empathy (AUDIO)

April 2nd, 2010

virginia-prescottFrom Virginia Prescott of New Hampshire Public Radio:

Nine high school students were indicted Monday on felony charges in the suicide case of a 15-year-old Massachusetts freshman. Phoebe Prince and her family had moved to the country from Ireland last year. The young teen hanged herself in January after relentless bullying from peers.

More than 40 states have anti-bullying laws requiring schools to adopt preventive policies against bullying, but the indictment of students is unprecedented. It got us thinking about an earlier conversation we had about the growing movement to teach empathy in the classroom. The Boston Globe reported that about 10 percent of schools have added social and emotional lessons to their curricula.

So what does an empathy curriculum look like? We asked Dr. Marc Brackett these questions last spring. He’s co-developer of the RULER Approach of emotional literacy and the deputy director of the Health, Emotion, and Behavior Labratory at Yale. Also with us was frequent Word of Mouth Contributor and mother-of-two Sarah Baker.

The Tao of Empathy: Practicing the Presence of Empathy and Four Elements of Empathic Connection

January 11th, 2010

“The Chinese philosopher Chuang-Tzu stated that true empathy requires listening with the whole being: ‘… it demands the emptiness of all the faculties. And when the faculties are empty, then the whole being listens. There is then a direct grasp of what is right there before you that can never be heard with the ear or understood with the mind.’”
—Excerpt from Nonviolent Communication: A Language of Life

In this telecourse recording, John Kinyon offers an overview and practice with 4 elements of empathy – presence, understanding/meaning, need language, and deepening into needs.

The focus of this recording is learning the presence of empathy and allowing the words of empathic reflection to flow naturally and simply from presence. This can happen when there is an “emptiness of the faculties” and listening with one’s “whole being.” You will also learn about giving people understanding in natural language before moving into translating and connecting to need language.
