Jackals, Giraffes Teach Nonviolent Communication (NVC)

September 19th, 2009

From the Durango Herald:

How does a young woman in a Nazi concentration camp care about the kind of day a guard is having? Why does a young man in jail in Albuquerque say he’s seeing life from a whole new perspective?
According to the Center for Nonviolent Communication, now based in Albuquerque, the answer is compassionate listening and empathy.

“Nonviolent communication is founded on the language  and communication skills that strengthen our ability to remain human, even under trying conditions,” Marshall Rosenberg, the founder of the center, wrote in his book Nonviolent Communication: A Language of Compassion.

Pelosi Warns Of Violence Over Heated Rhetoric, Chokes Up

September 17th, 2009

From the Huffington Post:

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s eyes watered Thursday as she called for the rhetorical heat to be turned down across the country, and warned that such words can lead to violence — a phenomenon she witnessed herself in San Francisco.

“I think we all have to take responsibility for our actions and our words. We are a free country and this balance between freedom and safety is one that we have to carefully balance,” she said.

Editor’s Note: I don’t usually post articles not directly related to the topic of empathy. Here’s a link to Gardner’s blog post: Scarlet ‘A’ for a Day
Here’s an article written from a secular perspective by examiner.com’s Paul Fidalgo about Gardner’s experience:  A Christian finds empathy among the atheists

Editor’s Note: I enjoyed Gardner’s transparency, I hope the operators of the Creation Museum read his post, it might be eye-opening for them. I’d be happy to post a response from the Creation Museum.

Times Colonist: Babies teach school kids to see through others’ eyes

August 8th, 2009

Lily Jenson is not yet a year old but she wears a tiny T-shirt emblazoned ‘Teacher’ for good reason. The bright-eyed infant is a veteran educator with the Roots of Empathy program — designed to help grade school kids understand emotions and behave more kindly as a result.

This fall, more than 20 babies will take part in teaching Capital Region pupils how to “read” the feelings and behaviour of others in order to make classrooms more accepting places.

Editor’s Note: I feel so hopeful reading this article, trusting that more young people will grow up with greater capacity for empathy.
